How to Enroll in Medicare After Retirement in Florida
How to Enroll in Medicare After Retirement in Florida

Introduction
If you’re planning to retire in Florida or have recently left your job, one of the most important steps you’ll face is enrolling in Medicare. Whether you're turning 65 or retiring later, it's crucial to understand your options, avoid penalties, and ensure continuous health coverage.
As a licensed Medicare agent based in Jacksonville, I help retirees across Florida navigate enrollment with clarity and confidence. In this blog, we’ll cover how and when to enroll in Medicare after retirement—plus the best plan choices for Florida residents.
Who Needs to Enroll in Medicare After Retirement?
If you’ve delayed enrolling in Medicare because you had employer-sponsored health insurance, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) once you retire. This lets you enroll in Medicare without penalty, even after age 65.
You’ll need to enroll in:
- Part A (Hospital Insurance) – often premium-free
- Part B (Medical Insurance) – has a monthly premium
You’ll also want to consider:
- Part D (Prescription Drug Plan)
- Medicare Advantage (Part C) or a Medicare Supplement (Medigap)
When to Enroll: Timelines That Matter
Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)
If you’re retiring around age 65, you’ll likely use your Initial Enrollment Period:
- Starts 3 months before your 65th birthday
- Ends 3 months after your birthday month
Special Enrollment Period (SEP)
If you retire after turning 65, you’ll use the SEP:
- Begins the month your job-based insurance ends
- Lasts for 8 months (for Part B enrollment)
- For drug plans (Part D), you have just 2 months to enroll
General Enrollment Period (GEP)
If you miss your IEP or SEP, you must wait until the General Enrollment Period (Jan 1–Mar 31), with coverage starting July 1 and a possible penalty.
Steps to Enroll in Medicare After Retirement
Step 1: Contact Social Security
You can apply for Medicare online at SSA.gov, by phone, or at your local Social Security office. You’ll need to complete:
- Application for Part B (CMS-40B)
- Request for Employment Information (CMS-L564)
I can provide these forms and walk you through the process.
Step 2: Decide How You Want to Get Your Coverage
There are two main ways to receive Medicare:
Option 1: Original Medicare (Parts A & B)
- Add Part D for prescriptions
- Optionally add a Medicare Supplement for extra protection
Option 2: Medicare Advantage (Part C)
- Includes Part A, B, and usually D in one plan
- Often includes dental, vision, and hearing benefits
Step 3: Choose a Plan Based on Your Needs
I help Florida retirees compare plans based on:
- Budget and premiums
- Doctor and hospital preferences
- Prescription needs
- Travel plans or seasonal residence in other states
What About COBRA or Retiree Coverage?
Some retirees are offered COBRA or retiree health benefits from their former employer. Be careful:
- COBRA does not delay your need to enroll in Medicare
- You must enroll in Part B within 8 months of losing active employment coverage
- If you delay, you risk penalties and coverage gaps
Always speak with a licensed agent before deciding to stay on COBRA instead of enrolling in Medicare.
Avoid These Common Medicare Mistakes After Retirement
- Missing your SEP deadlines
- Assuming retiree benefits are creditable (they may not be for Part D)
- Not checking if your doctors accept Medicare or are in-network for Advantage plans
- Delaying Part D and facing penalties
Florida retirees often face unique challenges like dual residency, variable income, and snowbird travel patterns. A local agent can help you plan smarter.
Real Example: Retiring in Jacksonville
One of my clients in Jacksonville retired at 67 and thought her COBRA plan would cover her until 70. After a brief conversation, we realized she needed to enroll in Medicare immediately to avoid late penalties.
We helped her enroll in Part B, compare Medicare Advantage and Supplement plans, and choose a plan that:
- Included her doctors
- Covered her prescriptions
- Had no premium and low out-of-pocket costs
She now enjoys peace of mind with full coverage and no financial surprises.
